Digital currency exchange Coinbase has announced the appointment of former Google executive Surojit Chatterjee as its new Chief Product Officer.

At Google, Chatterjee served as Vice President of Product and led Google Shopping that helps people discover and compare products on Google. Prior to that, he serves as the Head of Product at Flipkart, a popular Indian e-commerce site, and made the startup one of the world’s fastest-growing markets. While working there, he led the product management, user experience, product operation and data science. Before that, Chatterjee was a founding member of Google’s mobile search ads product.

Brian Armstrong, Co-Founder and CEO at Binance, said that Chatterjee’s 11 years at Google will be valuable as they work to scale Coinbase into a company with a meaningful impact on the world’s financial system. He said that Chatterjee's experience with Flipkart gave him a closer look at the complexity and inefficiency of global commerce.

“It can be difficult to grasp the size of the opportunity in simplifying cross-border transactions. But it’s clear that Surojit’s insights and experiences on the front lines of global commerce make him the perfect person to lead our product organization, help us continue our pace of repeatable innovation, and bring Coinbase products to the next billion crypto users around the world,” Armstrong wrote.

Chatterjee is excited about what crypto and blockchain technology can do to democratize financial systems.

"Google ads has helped democratize commerce, Flipkart and ecommerce has revolutionized life in India, and I believe Coinbase is going to turn conventional finance on its head,” he wrote. “I believe crypto currencies and blockchain technology can help open up the financial system for everyone by growing commerce and cross-border commerce, by lowering transaction costs and by providing higher security.”

Meanwhile, Coinbase just launched Coinbase Pro mobile app for its Android customers. It has also announced that its custodial services are going global as it launched Coinbase Custody International, a new entity based in Ireland.
