Citi and Coinbase are expanding 24/7 fiat access for more than 150 million Coinbase users, laying the groundwork for stablecoin payments between bank accounts and crypto wallets.

The partnership will initially connect Citi clients to Coinbase’s existing fiat on- and off-ramps. Users will be able to move traditional currency into crypto or cash out through a service designed to operate around the clock.

The next phase will focus on stablecoins. Citi and Coinbase are exploring a setup in which a client sends traditional money and the recipient receives stablecoins, although the companies have not provided operational details.

Citi already supports dollar transfers 24/7 and operates a token service for large institutional clients. Coinbase provides the exchange infrastructure linking those banking services to digital assets.

More details are expected in the coming months as the companies develop the stablecoin payment system.
