AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs for approximately $8.2 billion in stock, adding the artificial intelligence research lab’s spatial-intelligence expertise as the chipmaker expands its AI systems strategy.

World Labs develops models for generating and reconstructing three-dimensional environments. Its technology is intended for applications involving robotics and other physical-world systems.

Fei-Fei Li, World Labs’ founder, will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist after the transaction closes. She will report to AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su, while the World Labs team continues its AI model research within AMD.

The all-stock transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. AMD expects the acquisition to deepen integration between its hardware, software and AI model development.
