> The Series A will fund hiring and expansion in the San Francisco Bay Area as the Berlin-based startup takes on Temporal.

Restate has raised $20 million in a Series A to expand infrastructure that tracks multistep software workflows and helps reconstruct them after crashes or network interruptions.

Singular led the round, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. The Berlin-based startup plans to hire engineers and go-to-market staff while expanding its San Francisco Bay Area office.

Restate develops an execution engine for workflows that need to continue reliably when a process fails. Its system includes in-house storage, replication and redundancy layers instead of relying on an external database.

The new funding will support Restate’s effort to take on Temporal, a durable-infrastructure provider that announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation earlier this month.

Restate was founded in 2022. Co-founder Stephen Ewan previously co-created Apache Flink, an open-source stream-processing framework, and served as chief technology officer at Data Artisans and later Ververica.

The company’s other co-founders are Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, who previously worked with Ewan at Data Artisans and Ververica.
