> Vault Inheritance supports Bitcoin, XRP and Hedera through an assisted self-custody wallet, with a 30-day free trial and compliance review required before transfers.

Uphold launched a $19.99-a-month inheritance service for U.S. crypto users, allowing beneficiaries to receive Bitcoin, XRP and Hedera held in its assisted self-custody wallet after a compliance review.

Vault Inheritance supports Bitcoin (BTC), XRP and Hedera (HBAR). The service includes a 30-day free trial for U.S. users. Existing Vault customers are scheduled to receive the new pricing after Dec. 31, 2026.

Customers select a beneficiary through the Vault dashboard. The beneficiary must create an Uphold account but cannot access the assets before the claim is approved.

After the customer dies, Uphold’s compliance support team reviews legal documents before transferring control to the beneficiary’s Uphold wallet. The service terms do not specify which documents are required or how long the review takes.

Uphold estimates that almost 4 million BTC, valued at about $331 billion, may be stranded because owners died or lost access to their private keys. The estimate covers assets that may be inaccessible for different reasons.

A separate estimate placed permanently lost Bitcoin held through self-custody at 1.57 million BTC, using long periods of on-chain inactivity as a measure. Inactive coins may still belong to long-term holders, so the two figures describe different categories and are not directly comparable.

Crypto inheritance involves both legal ownership and the ability to authorize a blockchain transaction. An heir may receive legal title to an asset but still lack the private keys or other credentials needed to move it.

Vault Inheritance places Uphold between the customer and beneficiary during that process. The beneficiary receives no control until the claim passes review and the assets are transferred.

“Crypto has become a real part of how people build their financial future, but unlike traditional assets, there are few ways to pass it on securely — especially for XRP holders,” Nancy Beaton, Uphold’s president of consumer, said.

Uphold launched Vault in December 2023. The wallet combines self-custody with key replacement and access to trading through the platform.
