> The job gain fell 55,000 short of expectations, while unemployment rose from 4.1% in August.

U.S. employers added 29,000 jobs in September, well below expectations, while the unemployment rate climbed to 4.2%, putting fresh attention on labor-market conditions and the Federal Reserve’s rate outlook.

The payroll increase missed the expected 84,000 by 55,000. The unemployment rate was expected to remain at 4.1%, its August level, but instead rose by 0.1 percentage point.

The figures offer a weaker picture of hiring than anticipated as markets assess the economy and the Fed’s next steps.
