> The Japan-listed company held the sale proceeds in cash between the transactions and ended the third quarter with 44,000 BTC.

Metaplanet sold 10,000 Bitcoin (BTC) for cash during the third quarter and later made separate purchases totaling 11,000 BTC, a demonstration the Japan-listed treasury company said showed it could and would sell assets to meet debt obligations. It held 44,000 BTC as of Sept. 30.

The company’s preliminary, unaudited figures put the sales at about ¥124.7 billion, with an average price of ¥12,470,098 per BTC. Later purchases totaled about ¥149.9 billion at an average ¥13,626,928 per BTC. Metaplanet held the proceeds in cash before making the later purchases.

The average purchase price was ¥1,156,830 per BTC above the average sale price, a difference of about 9.3% calculated from those figures. Metaplanet said Bitcoin’s market price rose between the transactions. Its bonds and borrowings remained outstanding under their existing terms.

CEO Simon Gerovich said the cash raised exceeded the principal on the company’s bonds, borrowings and other interest-bearing debt. Metaplanet plans to seek a credit rating and widen its financing options, including bonds and preferred shares. The company said it is not guaranteed to obtain a rating, and the timing, scale and terms of future financing are also uncertain.

Metaplanet said rating agencies and fixed-income investors assess whether a Bitcoin treasury company would have both the ability and willingness to sell its holdings when needed. The company ended the quarter as the world’s second-largest publicly listed Bitcoin treasury company, with a net increase of 1,000 BTC during the quarter.
