> Lisa Su said AMD’s MI455X accelerator uses 432 gigabytes of HBM4, up 50% from the previous model’s 288 gigabytes of HBM3E.

AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su visited Samsung Electronics in Seoul on Oct. 7 to discuss a broader partnership as rising memory needs increase pressure on suppliers of artificial-intelligence chips.

Su met Samsung’s semiconductor leadership and said AMD has “many areas of cooperation” with the company. She also described Samsung and SK hynix as core supply-chain partners.

The discussions come as AMD expands its use of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) in newer products. The Instinct MI455X accelerator uses 432 gigabytes of HBM4, 50% more than the 288 gigabytes of HBM3E used in the previous MI355X.

Su said the MI455X and AMD’s Helios system have begun shipping. She said cooperation on HBM would extend across multiple product generations.

HBM supply is expected to remain tight through next year because the technology shares advanced manufacturing capacity with conventional DRAM. Improving yields and increasing output for new products also require time.

Samsung is positioning its foundry and advanced-packaging capabilities as part of a broader cooperation opportunity. Advanced packaging combines multiple chips into a single product, making it important for AI systems that pair processors with high-bandwidth memory.

AMD’s advanced central processors and graphics processors currently rely on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. for production, including the MI455X. Adding another manufacturer would require validation of performance, manufacturing yields and delivery schedules.

Su also met with South Korean artificial-intelligence semiconductor and infrastructure companies during her one-day visit and held discussions with SK hynix. “The semiconductor industry is a team sport,” Su said.
