SoftBank is seeking up to $100 billion from sovereign investors in the Gulf to create a fund that would acquire companies and apply artificial intelligence to their operations, expanding the Japanese group’s push into AI.

SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son has held discussions with senior figures in the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf markets about the proposed vehicle. The fund would target established businesses rather than focus solely on buying stakes in AI model developers or infrastructure companies.

SoftBank’s robotics and physical AI business, Roze, is expected to play a role in the strategy. The approach resembles private equity, with AI positioned as a tool for improving efficiency and business performance after an acquisition.

The fundraising remains under discussion, and no investors or completed commitments have been confirmed for the proposed $100 billion target.

The effort comes as SoftBank increases its exposure to AI. Its total investment commitment to OpenAI has reached about $65 billion, including $30 billion from the latest financing round. SoftBank also completed an $11.1 billion high-yield bond sale in September to help fund its investments.

Son previously secured major Gulf backing for SoftBank’s first Vision Fund, including commitments of $45 billion from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and $15 billion from Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala.
