> The three-year restructuring is intended to simplify operations, reduce duplication and help fund lower prices and investment in frontline associates.

Over a three-year period, Kroger intends to remove about 3,000 corporate positions while increasing its use of technology, including artificial intelligence.

The three-year plan is intended to reduce organizational layers, duplicated work and handoffs while helping fund lower prices and continued investment in frontline associates. Decisions on impacted roles are expected to begin being communicated in the coming months.

In an Oct. 12 internal memo, CEO Greg Foran wrote that the business is becoming “leaner, more focused and more competitive.” He added that the transformation “will also result in fewer roles across the company.”

The affected corporate functions and roles were not specified. The planned reduction follows Kroger’s elimination of fewer than 1,000 corporate administrative positions in August 2025.

Kroger announced its AI strategy Sept. 22, outlining applications that include demand forecasting, operational optimization, personalized services, generative AI and tools for frontline teams. AI literacy training and related tools are available to more than 400,000 associates.

“The goal is not autonomy everywhere,” Chief Digital Officer Yael Cosset said in the strategy announcement.

The restructuring links workforce reductions with broader efforts to use technology and data to speed decisions, improve operational efficiency and make work easier for associates. The role reductions are planned across multiple corporate functions, while the company has not identified which positions will be eliminated.

The next step is communication with affected employees, expected to begin in the coming months.
