> President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat said Alphabet expects capital expenditures to increase significantly in 2027 after spending $80.6 billion in the first half of 2026.

Alphabet plans to increase capital expenditures significantly in 2027 as demand for computing capacity keeps its artificial-intelligence buildout in an early expansion phase, President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat said Monday.

Porat said Alphabet is spending roughly $200 billion on AI capacity in 2026 and views the infrastructure expansion as a long-term opportunity. “We do see this as an opportunity that extends for quite some time,” she said.

The spending is already pressuring cash generation. Alphabet invested $44.924 billion in capital expenditures during the quarter ended June 30, while operating cash flow reached $39.069 billion, resulting in negative free cash flow of $5.855 billion.

Capital expenditures totaled $80.6 billion during the first six months of 2026, compared with $39.6 billion during the same period in 2025. The company directed most of the investment toward technical infrastructure, including servers, networking equipment, data-center land and construction.

Google Cloud provided a significant earnings base as Alphabet expanded capacity. Revenue rose 82% from a year earlier to $24.768 billion in the second quarter, while operating income reached $8.814 billion.

“You must invest for long-term growth. By the time you need it, it’s too late,” Porat said.

The expansion also increases Alphabet’s financial and operational exposure. Long-term debt stood at $98.165 billion as of June 30, and Alphabet raised $49.6 billion in net proceeds in June through common-stock and mandatory-convertible-preferred-stock offerings. The company said the proceeds could support AI infrastructure and global computing capacity.

Alphabet’s risk disclosures cover large technology investments, capacity commitments, supply-chain constraints, regulation and the possibility that AI products will not deliver expected returns. Alphabet-level activities, which include centralized AI research and development expenses, reported a $5.789 billion operating loss in the second quarter.

“We have to solve the downside anxiety. It’s real. It’s substantive,” Porat said.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said, “Our AI investments are redefining what’s possible across every part of our business.” Alphabet expects the next major increase in capital spending in 2027.
