> Hock Tan warned that some investors have extreme expectations as Broadcom reported $16.7 billion in third-quarter AI semiconductor revenue and forecast $21.7 billion for the fourth quarter.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan warned that some artificial intelligence investors are making speculative bets without fully understanding them, as the company forecasts sharply higher AI-chip revenue.

Tan made the remarks at a Singapore event on Monday, Oct. 12. Broadcom supplies custom AI accelerators and networking equipment to large technology companies under its announced infrastructure collaboration with OpenAI.

Broadcom reported $29.6 billion in fiscal third-quarter 2026 revenue for the period ended Aug. 2, up 86% from a year earlier. AI semiconductor revenue reached $16.7 billion, a 221% increase from the same period last year and a 54% gain from the previous quarter.

The company expects fourth-quarter AI semiconductor revenue of $21.7 billion, up 236% from a year earlier. Broadcom projects total fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of about $34.8 billion.

The OpenAI collaboration covers systems supporting 10 gigawatts of OpenAI-designed AI accelerators, as well as Ethernet systems. Deployment is targeted to begin in the second half of 2026 and finish by the end of 2029.

Broadcom and OpenAI also unveiled Jalapeño on June 24. The companies described the processor as OpenAI’s first intelligence processor and said it would form part of a multigeneration platform for large-scale AI infrastructure.
