> AscendEX cited authorization requirements, while BitMart and BitMEX gave different reasons. The cases do not show users shifting to THORChain.

Three crypto exchanges reached different stages of closure in 2026, with stated reasons ranging from authorization requirements to operating conditions and a strategic review. The cases do not establish a shared cause or show that customers moved to THORChain.

AscendEX said it ceased operations July 1, 2026, citing Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) authorization requirements alongside broader regulatory, financial and operational factors. In a later statement, it said a failed recapitalization transaction led to suspended normal operations and customer withdrawals.

BitMart began a staged wind-down, citing its operating conditions, the market environment and its future strategy. It ended trading services Aug. 25, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET (Aug. 26, 01:00 UTC), and plans to end platform operations Jan. 31, 2027, at 10:59 a.m. ET (15:59 UTC).

BitMEX attributed its closure to a strategic review. Trading services ended Sept. 23 at 12 a.m. ET (04:00 UTC); the company said legal or regulatory issues were not the cause.

The cases differ from one another. AscendEX named MiCA authorization as one factor, while BitMart cited operating and market conditions and BitMEX cited its strategic review. They do not show that compliance costs caused a broader wave of exchange failures.

MiCA began applying to stablecoin provisions June 30, 2024, and applied fully from Dec. 30, 2024. That timeline differs from the July 1, 2026, effective date cited in AscendEX’s notice.

THORChain enables swaps between supported native assets through liquidity pools and protocol vaults. Users send an asset to a vault, and the output asset is delivered on its own blockchain; the process does not require depositing funds with a centralized exchange. The available information does not quantify whether customers from these platforms have shifted to THORChain.
