> GastroScreen contains several intestinal cell types. Published results have not established how well it predicts drug responses in people.

Intero Biosystems is selling lab-grown intestinal models to drug developers as the Food and Drug Administration encourages non-animal approaches, while the models’ ability to predict human drug responses remains unestablished.

The company markets its GastroScreen organoids for safety and efficacy testing and disease modeling. The models are made from induced pluripotent stem cells and designed to include epithelial, mesenchymal, muscle, neuronal and endothelial cells. Intero’s product page lists live or frozen vials containing more than 100 viable organoids.

The FDA’s 2025 plan identified organoids and other non-animal methods as potential ways to reduce or replace animal testing for some drug-development uses. In March 2026, the agency issued draft guidance outlining a general framework for validating new methods used in drug submissions. The guidance does not endorse GastroScreen or any other specific model.

Intero is comparing GastroScreen results with known drug effects and with animal and clinical data. No published results establish that the model predicts drug effects more accurately than existing methods.

Intero announced a $2 million pre-seed financing round in June 2025.
