> AWS plans to place thousands of engineers with customers. Anthropic is training 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by the end of 2027.

Amazon Web Services is committing $1 billion to engineers who build AI systems inside customer operations, putting the focus on whether deployment teams can turn model spending into measurable business gains.

AWS announced the investment in its Forward Deployed Engineering organization on June 30. The group plans to embed thousands of engineers with customers, working alongside business, engineering and security teams to connect AI models with company data and existing systems. The teams are meant to build production systems and leave customers able to operate them.

U.S. job postings for forward deployed engineers rose from about 200 in 2024 to around 1,200 in 2025, then topped 5,200 in the first seven months of 2026. Those figures count advertised positions, not hires.

Other companies are taking distinct approaches to deployment talent. Anthropic has committed $100 million to its Claude Frontier Academy plan, which aims to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by the end of 2027. The program’s first credentials are expected in early 2027. “The hard part is building that depth of talent,” said Steve Corfield, Anthropic’s global head of business development and partnerships.

OpenAI launched a deployment company with more than $4 billion in initial investment and has since acquired applied AI engineering firm Tomoro. Accenture and Google Cloud plan to form a 1,000-person forward deployed engineering workforce as part of a new Gemini Enterprise business group.

One AI-supported software development project at communications software company Smarsh freed an estimated $5 million to $10 million in engineering and product capacity during its first year for innovation work. The estimate describes capacity, not cash savings, and is not an FDE-specific result.

Amazon’s broader AI spending provides financial context, but the figures do not measure returns from its engineering organization. AWS sales reached $42.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 37% year over year, while its AI business exceeded a $25 billion annualized revenue run rate. Amazon recorded a $7.6 billion free cash flow outflow for the 12 months ended June 30. Net purchases of property and equipment, after proceeds from sales and incentives, rose $66.1 billion year over year, primarily reflecting AI investment.
