Stellantis is testing a diesel-hybrid powertrain for the next Fiat Ducato, but has not set when the system will reach the market. Pratola Serra is expected to produce the engine, while vans are planned for assembly at Atessa. The Atessa project carries a $1.12 billion investment.

The test was discussed at an Oct. 15 update meeting between Stellantis and Uilm in Rome. Gianluca Ficco, the union’s national secretary for the automotive sector, called the test “positive news” for both plants. He said the system could help meet emissions-reduction goals for light commercial vehicles while offering a product consumers want.

Stellantis’ plan for its next-generation mid-size and large vans includes battery-electric, hybrid and internal-combustion options, but does not specify a diesel-hybrid system. Production of the next-generation large van is targeted for early 2029, but that timing does not confirm when the diesel hybrid will be ready.
