Bluesky plans to introduce payments within months, aiming to let users financially support activity across its decentralized network as it develops revenue beyond advertising.

Bluesky Chief Executive Toni Schneider and Chief Operating Officer Rose Wang outlined the plan Thursday. Schneider said users already sell goods, raise funds and help one another through the service. The proposed tools are meant to make that support easier and work across Bluesky and other applications on the same network.

Bluesky’s executives said they see ways for the network to generate revenue beyond advertising. She pointed to Bluesky’s status as a Public Benefit Corporation, which she said puts the company’s mission at the center of its business strategy. Wang also said the network’s infrastructure prevents the company from locking users in.

Schneider said users can leave for another platform if they object to changes, a possibility he said keeps the company’s leadership accountable as it begins monetizing. Wang framed payments as an initial step in an effort to disrupt the infrastructure layer itself instead of building only another app. The company plans to add payments in the coming months.
