> The asset manager recorded $205.47 billion in third-quarter net inflows, slightly above the year-earlier total.

BlackRock ended the third quarter with a record $15.49 trillion in assets under management, a sum equal to 47.6% of U.S. second-quarter GDP at an annual rate.

The firm collected $205.466 billion in net inflows during the three months ended Sept. 30, slightly more than the $204.642 billion recorded in the year-earlier quarter. BlackRock’s quarter-end AUM was 15% above the $13.464 trillion reported a year earlier.

The GDP figure was $32.56 trillion. The comparison gives a sense of scale, but it pairs client assets measured on one date with economic output measured over time. It does not mean BlackRock owns a comparable share of the U.S. economy.

BlackRock’s third-quarter revenue rose 19% from a year earlier to $7.75 billion. GAAP diluted earnings were $10.57 per share, up from $8.43. Adjusted diluted earnings reached $15.93 per share, a 38% increase.

The firm’s iShares exchange-traded funds drew $134.51 billion in net inflows during the quarter. BlackRock recorded $869 billion in net inflows over the 12 months through Sept. 30 and raised $68 billion in private markets over that period.

The company’s AUM measure covers financial assets managed for clients on a discretionary basis under agreements expected to continue for at least 12 months. It excludes assets receiving nondiscretionary advice or short-term temporary management. GDP measures the value of final goods and services produced in the United States, making the two figures different kinds of measures.

“Clients entrusted us with $205 billion of net inflows this quarter, and $869 billion over the last year,” BlackRock Chairman and CEO Laurence D. Fink said.
