Tesla’s second-generation Roadster demonstration on Oct. 16 paired extreme stunts with a delivery target that has moved to 2028, eight years beyond the previously stated 2020 goal.

The display featured the car driving upside down, performing airborne flips and reaching a shown 0-to-100 kph time of 0.81 seconds. Attendees received earplugs before the demonstrations. For the inverted run, a rear fan pulled air from beneath the car to create downforce of about twice the force of gravity.

Cold-gas thrusters developed in cooperation with SpaceX powered the airborne maneuvers. The system has 10 nozzles and about 250 kilograms (roughly 550 pounds) of stored gas, which takes up the rear passenger area.

A rough estimate for lifting a two-metric-ton car puts the required gas flow at about 28 kilograms per second. At that rate, a 250-kilogram supply would last about nine seconds at most; practical hover time would likely be only a few seconds. The calculation points to brief lifts rather than sustained flight.

The Roadster’s stated range has also declined from about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) to about 480 kilometers (300 miles). Its delivery target, previously set for 2020, now stands at 2028. The car’s price has not been announced.

The demonstration left questions about the thruster system’s safety unanswered. Tanks behind the seats hold gas at several hundred atmospheres, and the display did not explain how they would be protected in a collision or rollover.

The latest dated milestone for the Roadster is its 2028 delivery target. No more specific delivery date or price was provided.
