> Lee Hyoung-Il said semiconductor demand remains ahead of supply as producers expand capacity. The chip boom is also lifting South Korea’s tax revenue outlook for 2026.

South Korean Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-Il expects the semiconductor expansion to continue through 2027, citing demand that still outstrips supply as chipmakers add capacity.

Lee gave the outlook Saturday during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bangkok. He said producers are increasing output, but demand remains well ahead of available chips.

The forecast followed a difficult week for semiconductor shares. Investors weighed the possibility of higher interest rates and intensifying competition from Chinese companies. South Korean chipmakers SK Hynix and Seoul Semiconductor fell alongside U.S. company Nvidia.

Lee tied swings in South Korea’s stock market partly to semiconductors’ larger role in the country’s economy compared with other nations. He described the broader economy as solid despite the market volatility.

The chip expansion is also supporting public finances. South Korea expects 2026 tax collections to exceed its earlier estimate, and Lee expects the boom to leave the country in a stronger fiscal position.
