> The farm held about 6,000 turkeys. Tyson Foods and JBS N.V. both closed lower on Oct. 19.

Brazil confirmed Newcastle disease at a commercial turkey farm in Santa Catarina on Oct. 18, prompting containment measures and a review of poultry trade rules with China.

The farm is in Nova Itaberaba, and Brazil disclosed the case publicly on Oct. 19. It held about 6,000 turkeys, which remained on the property and were not intended for meat production.

Tyson Foods (TSN) closed Oct. 19 at $54.00, down 1.64%, while JBS N.V. (JBS) finished at $12.90, down about 1%. Both prices were recorded at 4 p.m. ET (20:00 UTC). The declines alone do not establish a connection to the outbreak.

Officials stopped birds from leaving the farm and planned to cull the flock, then clean and disinfect the property. They also planned to monitor about 133 properties across Nova Itaberaba, Coronel Freitas, Nova Erechim and Águas Frias. Officially inspected poultry products remained safe to eat.

Brazil was notifying trade partners and reviewing bilateral protocols. It had announced neither the scope nor the start date of any restrictions as of Oct. 19. Ricardo Santin, president of Associação Brasileira de Proteína Animal (ABPA), said the agreement with China calls for an initial suspension of poultry meat exports while China determines the scope of any import restriction.

Brazil’s previous commercial poultry outbreak occurred in Rio Grande do Sul in July 2024. Its self-declaration of Newcastle disease-free status for poultry took effect Oct. 23, 2024, 90 days after it applied a stamping-out policy at the affected farm.
