> The proposed first program with M42 would focus on hypertension. The companies announced a nonbinding term sheet on Oct. 20.

AstraZeneca and Oracle announced plans Oct. 20 for an AI-assisted research project in Abu Dhabi that would help identify patients with uncontrolled hypertension and assess their potential eligibility for clinical trials.

The planned work with M42, an Abu Dhabi health care company, would be the first program under a nonbinding term sheet between AstraZeneca and Oracle. The companies aim to explore how data from routine care could help connect patients with medical research.

Care teams could use the proposed tools to flag patients whose blood pressure remains uncontrolled. Authorized research teams would then assess whether those patients appear to meet preliminary criteria for selected studies. Qualified professionals would review potential matches, while patient contact and enrollment would follow approved procedures and documented informed consent.

The hypertension program has both a care and a research aim: identifying patients who may need attention for uncontrolled blood pressure and finding those who might qualify for a study. A preliminary match would not itself enroll a patient.

Beyond the Abu Dhabi project, the companies plan to examine trial recruitment, earlier diagnosis, drug-safety monitoring and ways to use evidence from routine care. Potential areas include oncology; cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases; respiratory conditions and immunology; and rare diseases. Further projects are envisioned in the U.S., Middle East and Europe.

Oracle would contribute health data, cloud, AI, analytics and clinical-workflow capabilities, while AstraZeneca would bring its clinical-development expertise. The companies also plan to explore how findings from care and research could inform future studies and treatment. They did not disclose financial terms.

The proposal addresses a different stage of research from AstraZeneca’s [AI-assisted drug discovery deal with insitro](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/business/32513>), announced Oct. 15. That agreement is valued at up to $1.5 billion and aims to identify and advance drug targets.

The Oracle collaboration calls for deidentified data, and AstraZeneca would not receive information that identifies patients. Each proposed project would be reviewed separately and proceed only once appropriate legal, privacy, regulatory, ethical and institutional safeguards are in place.
