> The company plans to expand its manipulation model and customer deployments. Its investor describes a laboratory peak of up to 1,500 picks per hour.

Eka Robotics announced a $150 million Series A on Oct. 20, led by Andreessen Horowitz and F-Prime, to expand a robot-control model designed to help machines respond to physical contact as they handle objects.

The company plans to use the funding to develop its manipulation model and increase customer deployments. Eka calls the model Vision-Force-Action (VFA), combining visual information with force feedback as a robot grips or moves an object.

Robots can struggle when objects slip, deform or make unexpected contact. Eka’s approach uses information about those physical interactions to guide how a robot handles an object, including when its position or contact changes.

Eka trains robot-manipulation policies through reinforcement learning in physics simulations. In simulation, virtual robots encounter changes in object placement, friction and contact before the resulting control policy is used on physical machines. The simulations can generate thousands of hours of robot experience in minutes.

Laboratory induction and bin-picking tests reached up to 1,500 picks per hour. A separate benchmark lists 1,500 operations per hour and a human baseline of about 600 operations per hour. Those figures use different units and are not a direct comparison.

Demonstrations have included inserting wires and screwing in a light bulb. Sustaining the reported laboratory performance over full production shifts remains a test as Eka expands the model to more tasks and adds customer deployments.
