> GM combines parallel engineering, AI and simulation while keeping physical validation in development.

General Motors aims to cut vehicle development from concept to production to roughly two years, compared with a traditional four-to-five-year cycle, through wider use of artificial intelligence and simulation. The company’s approach has design, software, safety and manufacturing teams work at the same time from shared virtual models.

Using a common digital foundation lets teams assess design choices earlier and shorten feedback loops. Simulation can reduce the number of physical iterations, while physical validation remains part of development.

GM points to its battery work as an example of virtual testing. GM evaluated more than 300,000 battery designs using lithium manganese-rich chemistry before moving to physical hardware.

The battery example shows how GM is applying virtual methods, but it does not establish that a vehicle has completed development on the shorter timeline. GM has not given a date for reaching its goal or identified a vehicle program that has met it.
