> Results are scheduled for 7 a.m. ET (11:00 UTC) Friday, Oct. 23, after Q2 billed business rose 9% to $455.8 billion.

American Express plans to post its third-quarter results at roughly 7 a.m. ET (11:00 UTC) Friday, Oct. 23, giving investors an update on card spending, fee income and benefit costs against its 10% full-year revenue-growth outlook.

A conference call is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET (12:30 UTC). The results will follow a second quarter in which revenue net of interest expense rose 10% year over year to $19.637 billion and billed business, a measure of spending on the company’s cards, reached $455.8 billion, up 9% on both reported and foreign-exchange-adjusted bases.

Several revenue streams grew in Q2. Discount revenue increased 9%, net card fees climbed 15% and net interest income rose 11%. Billed business grew 11% in U.S. Consumer Services and 5% in Commercial Services. International Card Services recorded 13% growth, or 12% after adjusting for foreign-exchange effects.

Costs grew faster than revenue. Consolidated expenses rose 12% to $14.482 billion. Higher variable customer-engagement costs reflected card spending, the U.S. Platinum card refresh and cardmember use of benefits. Marketing expense increased 6%.

Provisions for credit losses declined to $1.084 billion from $1.405 billion a year earlier. The decrease mainly reflected a reserve release in Q2, compared with a reserve build in the year-earlier quarter. Higher net write-offs partly offset that decline.

After its second-quarter results, American Express raised its full-year revenue-growth guidance to 10% and kept its diluted earnings-per-share range at $17.30 to $17.90. Friday’s release and conference call will provide the next update on those targets and the spending and cost trends behind them.
