Shinhan Card and two SBI Group companies plan a proof of concept to assess yen stablecoin payments for Japanese visitors in South Korea, with wallet transfers and trade settlement also under review.

The companies signed an agreement during an Oct. 20 ceremony at SBI Group headquarters in Tokyo and announced it the following day. The partners are Shinhan Card, SBI VC Trade and SBI XDC Network APAC, a joint venture of SBI Holdings and TradeFinex Tech.

The card-linked work will examine whether visitors can pay with convenience comparable to conventional card transactions. The project also covers transfers between digital wallets and settlement for cross-border trade.

The companies will study anti-money-laundering controls and abnormal-transaction detection. They also plan to examine links between yen-denominated stablecoins and other digital assets and in-store payments, along with connections between cross-border payments and existing financial infrastructure.

The agreement includes exploring participation in the XDC Network node ecosystem. It does not name XDC Network as the payment rail for the proposed tests.

The companies have not named a stablecoin or set dates for testing or a commercial launch. They plan to provide further details later.
