> The quarter included a 24.6 billion kronor contract for 16 Gripen E fighter jets for Ukraine, with deliveries scheduled for 2029-30.

Saab’s new orders more than tripled in the third quarter to 65.8 billion Swedish kronor ($6.6 billion), lifted by major military contracts including a fighter-jet deal for Ukraine. The total was up from 20.9 billion kronor in the year-earlier quarter.

Sales reached 20.6 billion kronor, above the 20 billion kronor forecast. Earnings before interest and taxes were 1.95 billion kronor, topping the 1.9 billion kronor estimate.

The largest highlighted deal was a 24.6 billion kronor contract for 16 Gripen E fighter jets for Ukraine. Saab signed the contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration in June and booked it in the third quarter. Deliveries are scheduled for 2029-30.

“The growing customer demand is reflected in major contract awards, including Gripen for Ukraine, GlobalEye and an order related to Germany's new frigates,” Saab CEO Micael Johansson said.

Other orders included a 10.1 billion kronor order for GlobalEye military surveillance aircraft for an undisclosed customer in the Middle East. Saab also recorded an 8.7 billion kronor order for equipment for German Navy warships.

Large orders totaled 52.1 billion kronor, more than six times the year-earlier level. Small orders rose 84%, while medium-sized orders declined 16%.

Saab’s order backlog stood at 364.2 billion kronor at the end of September, up from 274.5 billion kronor at the start of the year. It was the sixth consecutive quarter of backlog growth.

Johansson cited rising geopolitical tensions, airspace violations, drone incidents and ongoing conflicts as factors driving demand. He said Saab is expanding production capacity and investment to meet customer needs, and described the long-term market outlook as favorable.

In July, Saab said it was looking to increase annual jet production from 15 to between 20 and 30. Johansson said production could rise further if the company brought in partners more substantially.

Saab shares closed 1.8% higher Friday, while the Stoxx 600 fell 0.3%.
