Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) announced it would receive an $85 million federal award to develop advanced chips for the fusion power industry.

The award falls under the CHIPS Act. The award also grants the federal government a stake in CFS.

The award outlines five research areas: silicon carbide power electronics, radio-frequency generators, faster reactor controls, radiation-resistant electronics and adaptations of artificial intelligence hardware for power plants.

Silicon carbide components manage high voltages. In fusion systems, powerful electrical pulses drive superconducting magnets that confine plasma. CFS also plans to develop radio-frequency generators, which heat fusion fuel.

Other work would focus on electronics that help control a reactor more quickly and components built to withstand radiation. Radiation-resistant electronics may last longer inside a fusion plant and help reduce operating costs.

The fifth area involves adapting graphics processing units and tensor processing units, types of AI chips, for use in fusion power plants. The proposed research and supply-chain development are intended to support the growth of commercial fusion.

“Ultimately, that means a more capable, economical power plant and a stronger U.S. supply chain to build it,” CFS co-founder and Chief Science Officer Brandon Sorbom said.

The award focuses on semiconductor technologies and supply-chain development for commercial fusion.
