> Canadian exports rose nearly 16% in 2025 as U.S. buyers moved ahead of anticipated tariffs, while maple syrup production fell 5%.

The Quebec Maple Syrup Producers expects Quebec’s maple syrup reserve to be depleted by February, leaving less stored supply to cushion weather-related changes in output while production continues.

The reserve is held in three Quebec warehouses with capacity for about 218,000 barrels. Weather has a strong effect on maple syrup output, and the stockpile helps offset changes in production. Once it is depleted, that stored supply will no longer be available for that purpose.

Canadian syrup exports climbed nearly 16% in 2025 as U.S. buyers sought supplies ahead of anticipated tariffs. That followed 9% export growth in 2024. Canadian maple syrup production, meanwhile, declined 5% in 2025.

Exports continued to increase in 2026, but more slowly. Shipments during the first eight months were up 2.5% from the same period a year earlier. That comparison covers only January through August, while the 2025 growth figure covers the full year.

The United States receives about 65% of Canadian syrup exports, down from 80% roughly two decades ago as producers have expanded into other markets. Canada accounted for more than 75% of global maple syrup production in 2025, and Quebec supplied 90% of Canada’s output.

Simon Doré-Ouellet, deputy general manager of the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, said the market has enough syrup for the coming year. He said the reserve will need replenishment over the next several years and that a strong 2027 production year would be welcome, though producers have little control over that outcome.

Quebec has increased its production capacity by 50% over six years, adding more than 21 million taps where sap can be collected. The capacity expansion comes as the reserve approaches depletion and the group anticipates needing to rebuild it in the years ahead.
