> The company said daily users topped 300,000 by September, and its app had 2.2 million monthly active users that month.

India-based gaming company Matiks has raised $10 million in pre-Series A funding to expand Jelo, its game-creation platform, and pursue growth in additional markets with fresh investor backing.

Matiks said General Catalyst led the round. Investor Ronnie Screwvala and existing backers InfoEdge Ventures, Tanglin Venture Partners and Untitled Ventures also participated. The company’s total funding now exceeds $13.5 million.

Jelo is an experimental platform where users can build games for other people to play. Matiks plans to use the new capital to scale the platform and expand into more markets.

Matiks’ app offers math, puzzle, memory and logic games. Players can practice against bots before competing with other users, and can take on challenges and quests to earn points, keep streaks and unlock games.

The company said daily users exceeded 300,000 by September, compared with 22,000 earlier in the year. Monthly active users reached 2.2 million that month.

Most of Matiks’ players are in India, with users also in the United States, South Korea and Japan. The company plans to localize the product for South Korea and Japan.

Matiks began testing a subscription in October. It unlocks game analysis, tips and tricks, practice and additional features.

Matiks was founded by college friends Sudhanshu Bhatia, Mohan Kumar and Sushant Timmapur. Bhatia said he began working on the idea while developing an anti-money laundering strategy at American Express, drawing on his competitive mental math background. The company has 41 full-time employees.
