> The business is projected to reach 22% of EMC’s revenue by 2028, while Co-Tech’s ultra-thin copper foil could contribute revenue as early as the second half of that year.

Taiwan-based EMC could begin gaining share in the ABF substrate copper-clad laminate (CCL) market in the second half of 2026 as customers accelerate qualification of new suppliers in a segment long dominated by Japanese manufacturers.

Japanese suppliers have held more than 95% of the market for ABF CCL, low-dielectric T-glass and ultra-thin copper foil for more than a decade. Capacity expansion by Japanese makers has lagged demand. Use of ABF substrate materials has doubled every one to two years as substrates grow larger and add layers; lower production yields also increase the material needed for each usable unit. Customers accelerated qualification of Taiwanese and mainland Chinese suppliers in the first half of 2026.

The total addressable market for ABF substrate CCL is projected at $800 million to $1.2 billion in 2026, rising to $2 billion to $2.5 billion in 2027 and $4 billion to $4.5 billion in 2028. The business is projected to account for about 15% of EMC’s revenue in 2026, 19% in 2027 and 22% in 2028.

The average selling price (ASP) for a full sheet of ABF substrate CCL is about $1,500, compared with ASPs of roughly $130 for M7-grade CCL and $180 for M8-grade CCL. The ABF product’s gross margin is already above 50% and could approach an industry average exceeding 70% over time. EMC’s overall gross margin is projected at 35.2% in 2026, 40.7% in 2027 and 43.4% in 2028.

Co-Tech says it is preparing research resources and designing a new production line for substrate-grade ultra-thin copper foil. New suppliers could enter that market from late 2027 to early 2028, and Co-Tech’s business could contribute revenue as early as the second half of 2028.

Faster qualification does not guarantee large-scale shipments. Revenue gains will depend on suppliers completing certification and bringing production capacity online.
