Vertex introduced Sōl on Oct. 26 as a framework for linking tax determinations with invoicing, regulatory reporting and audit documentation.

Vertex Intelligence, the experience’s AI component, is intended to provide regulatory information, explanations and recommendations. Businesses can set whether AI recommends an action, assists with tax work or acts within controls the business establishes. Stated uses include assessing regulatory changes, surfacing issues before filing and organizing evidence after an auditor requests records. The design links a tax decision with its supporting material across multiple stages. The announcement did not identify Sōl customers or provide measured results.

“Tax teams need to be able to see what’s happening, understand what matters, and stay in control,” Vertex CEO Christopher Young said.

Emerald Research Group conducted a double-blind online survey for Vertex in 2026. Among 402 decision-makers, 81% said they would be comfortable adopting AI for compliance only if they had full visibility into automated decisions and could override or reverse actions at any time. The respondents included 302 people in the United States and 100 in Germany. All had authority over enterprise tax and compliance software at companies with revenue of at least $150 million or €150 million. The finding measures stated comfort under those conditions, not current AI adoption.

Vertex provides indirect tax and compliance services, and its customers include more than 60% of Fortune 500 companies. Sōl spans existing and future capabilities, with Vertex retaining discretion over feature development and release timing. The company announced no pricing or general-availability date.

VERX closed at $15.17 on Oct. 26, down $0.22, or 1.43%, from its Oct. 23 close of $15.39. The announcement was posted at 1:01 p.m. ET, before the U.S. stock market closed at 4 p.m. ET.
