> The company had $5.5 billion in cash at June 30 and a $104 billion revenue backlog, alongside $25 billion in new commitments early in the third quarter.

CoreWeave had $35.6 billion in debt and $5.5 billion in cash and cash equivalents at June 30, putting its AI cloud business at the center of debate over how lenders finance data-center expansion.

The company’s revenue backlog stood at $104 billion at quarter-end, and it added $25 billion in new commitments early in the third quarter. CoreWeave also took on an additional $4.2 billion in debt last month.

Neoclouds buy costly processors and build data centers, then rent computing capacity to AI developers. The model requires substantial upfront financing and depends on demand for rented computing power. Large technology companies can draw on revenue from other businesses to support AI investment, while neoclouds rely more heavily on demand for computing capacity. Higher borrowing costs or customer spending cuts can make debt harder to service.

CoreWeave said, “The AI cloud market is not a monolith.” CoreWeave said, “Lenders distinguish between speculative capacity and businesses with differentiated technology, creditworthy customers, contracted revenue and a record of delivering.” CoreWeave said, “Those strengths underpin the opportunities we continue to see to finance our growth.”

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk warned in an Oct. 25 post on X that debt markets had nearly shut out companies without substantial revenue beyond AI data centers. He said more than 200 neocloud providers could face exits and consolidation. Musk said SpaceX was an exception, pointing to $40 billion in debt financing and revenue from Starlink.
