> Vehicles priced at $20,000 to $29,999 saw the sharpest drop in days on dealer lots, while vehicles under $40,000 made up about 31% of September 2026 inventory.

Lower-priced vehicles moved off dealer lots faster in Q3 2026 than in Q1, while tighter supply at lower price points and elevated transaction prices underscored pressure on U.S. car shoppers.

Vehicles priced from $20,000 to $29,999 spent 20% fewer days in inventory in Q3 2026 than in Q1 2026. The average time before sale fell about 18% for vehicles priced at $30,000 to $39,999 and nearly 12% for those priced at $40,000 to $49,999. These changes measure time on dealer lots, not how many vehicles were sold.

Days to turn is the average time a vehicle remains in dealer inventory before sale. Days' supply is a separate measure: It estimates how long available stock would last at the current sales pace.

Available new-vehicle inventory totaled 2.80 million units in September 2026, equal to 82 days' supply. Vehicles priced at $30,000 or less had 63 days' supply, compared with 68 days for those priced from $30,000 to $40,000 and 91 days for vehicles from $50,000 to $60,000. Vehicles under $40,000 made up about 31% of available inventory.

The average new-vehicle transaction price reached $50,562 in September 2026, up 0.7% from a year earlier and $52 below the December 2025 record. A stronger mix of lower-priced vehicles helped temper the overall increase. “Consumers don’t buy the industry average. They buy a vehicle, and prices for many of the vehicles they’re shopping are continuing to move higher,” said Erin Keating, an executive analyst at Cox Automotive.

Financing costs also remained high. Loans of at least 84 months accounted for a record 25.5% of financed new-vehicle purchases in Q3 2026, while the average monthly payment was $787, continuing the [financing trends covered earlier](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/business/31892>).

Sales patterns have varied by period: Compact-car and compact-SUV sales fell more than the overall market in Q1 2026, while affordable segments later helped moderate September 2026 price growth. The faster turnover does not establish that total sales rose in the lower-priced bands.
