> The share was down from 27.4% in the comparable 2025 period and was the lowest in at least 15 years.

Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Oracle returned a smaller share of operating cash to investors in the first three quarters of 2026, as capital spending outpaced cash generation.

The five companies distributed $50.6 billion in dividends and share repurchases, equal to 9.3% of their $542.9 billion in operating cash flow. The payout share was 27.4% in the comparable 2025 period and was the lowest in at least 15 years. A smaller share of each operating cash dollar went to immediate shareholder returns, even as operating cash increased.

Operating cash flow reached a group record, up 29% from a year earlier. Capital spending doubled to $556.9 billion, leaving combined free cash flow — operating cash flow minus capital spending — at negative $14 billion, compared with a $143.5 billion surplus a year earlier.

The comparison covers the first three quarters of 2026, though the companies’ fiscal calendars differ: Microsoft’s fiscal year ends in June and Oracle’s in May.

Share repurchases drove the decline in payouts. The companies bought back $13.6 billion in shares, down 83% from $81.8 billion in the year-earlier period. Dividends rose to $37 billion from $33.9 billion.

Alphabet and Meta had no share repurchases in the nine months ended Sept. 30. Meta had repurchased $26.248 billion in the corresponding 2025 period. Buybacks reduce the number of shares outstanding and can lift earnings per share. With fewer shares retired, business growth and the ability of AI investments to produce profits carry more weight in per-share results.

Amazon separately recorded a $42.4 billion free-cash-flow outflow over the 12 months ended Sept. 30, primarily tied to higher property and equipment purchases for AI investment. That 12-month figure uses a different window from the five-company comparison. Amazon kept its 2026 cash capital spending outlook at about $220 billion. President and CEO Andy Jassy said, “Our AWS investment in functionality and infrastructure is working.”

The payout comparison adds a shareholder-return measure to TokenPost’s [earlier coverage of the companies’ cash flow and capital spending](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/business/44611>).
