> The company says its program met all 73 voluntary standards, with no nonconformances found. The accreditation does not guarantee performance in a future emergency.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company announced Friday, Oct. 30, that its emergency management program had earned accreditation from the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) after a five-year effort. PG&E described the distinction as a first worldwide for an energy utility. EMAP’s directory lists PG&E as an accredited private-sector program for 2026.

PG&E said its program met all 73 voluntary standards, with assessors identifying no nonconformances. The standards cover risk assessment, incident management, resource coordination, communications, training and exercises. EMAP’s private-sector directory also lists Amtrak, DC Water & Sewer Authority and Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

The company said its accreditation work included benchmarking its program against accredited organizations, external assessments, and changes to emergency policies and procedures. PG&E serves more than 16 million customers in Northern and Central California.

Jody Ferguson, chair of the EMAP commission, said the assessment reflected a focus on people affected by emergencies. “They understand that emergencies are ultimately about people—the communities they serve.”

The accreditation concerns whether the assessed program meets the standard. It does not assure that the program will be effective in a future emergency.

In a separate event, PG&E said it restored power to 365 customers on Oct. 24 after a Public Safety Power Shutoff prompted by forecasts of strong winds and low humidity.
