> AI-related U.S. corporate bond issuance reached $655 billion through mid-October, while cash outflows at major technology companies have sharpened questions about returns.

U.S. artificial intelligence infrastructure spending is facing a sharper test of its returns as rising financing costs, cash outflows at major technology companies and opposition to data centers shift attention from capacity growth to profitability. The latest company results add fresh cash-flow figures to [earlier concerns over AI debt and infrastructure risks](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/investing/29563>).

AI-related issuance in the U.S. corporate bond market climbed from $394 billion in 2025 to $655 billion through mid-October 2026. CoreWeave, Nebius and Nscale have faced near exclusion from the high-yield bond market. CoreWeave’s 9.75% coupon bond, issued earlier this year, now yields more than 15% in secondary trading. The yield reflects the return buyers currently demand for the bond, adding to the company’s financing pressure.

Quarterly cash-flow results have made the return question more immediate. Alphabet posted negative free cash flow for a second consecutive quarter. Its shares fell 13% in one day after its earnings release, erasing about $500 billion in market value. Amazon’s negative free cash flow was nearly $35 billion for the quarter.

Meta faced pressure after increasing its capital spending plans, and S&P moved its credit outlook to negative. Microsoft was the only company to post positive free cash flow among the four large cloud companies in the quarterly comparison, at $18.6 billion. Equity investors are paying closer attention to cash flow, spending discipline and profits, while creditors are seeking higher yields and stronger protections.

The pressure has also reached software companies. ServiceNow shares fell 31% in one day after its quarterly sales outlook missed expectations, while Twilio shares declined 18%. Investors are concerned that generative AI products may weaken traditional software companies’ pricing power and profit margins, adding to demands for evidence that technology spending can produce earnings.

Data center construction has become a political risk as disputes over electricity prices, environmental effects and jobs fuel opposition. About two-thirds of Americans oppose building new data centers. With U.S. midterm elections approaching, a Democratic return to control of Congress could bring more investigations, hearings and regulatory scrutiny for the AI industry, potentially affecting construction and operating costs.

AI demand remains strong, but capacity expansion alone is drawing less attention than whether the investment can produce revenue and profit. The approaching midterm elections are the next political milestone, while cash generation remains a central financial test for the companies expanding AI infrastructure.
