> Paid miles can spread fixed expenses across more use, while operators choose between established ride-hailing networks and direct customer relationships.

As autonomous mobility moves toward early commercial reality, an unresolved business question is which model can sustain the most durable economics: operating fleets, supplying autonomous-driving systems or connecting riders with services.

Removing driver labor shifts costs toward vehicles and technology. How often those vehicles carry paying riders also matters. More paid miles give fixed expenses, including software, remote operations, mapping and compliance, more use across which to be spread.

Customer access adds another part to the equation. Fleet operators can use established ride-hailing platforms to reach customers or build direct relationships with riders and rely less on those platforms.

Fleet operators, autonomy suppliers and ride-hailing platforms have different risk and return profiles. Utilization and customer access frame the economic contest, but the available details leave open which model will capture the most durable economics.
