Toronto-based Xatoms says it has more than six major projects coming up, while founder and CEO Diana Virgovicova says the company needs more lab work and support to determine how to manufacture additional materials.

“We have more than six major projects coming up,” Virgovicova said. She did not name the projects or give their timelines.

Xatoms says its software uses artificial intelligence and quantum chemistry to screen thousands of potential photocatalysts and predict their performance before lab testing. The company says the materials are designed to activate under sunlight or visible LED light, generating reactive oxygen species that attack contaminants. Xatoms says its catalysts are not consumed in the process.

The technology is aimed at treating polluted water. An estimated 2.1 billion people lacked safely managed drinking water in 2024. The measure covers water that is available at home when needed and free from contamination.
