> Launched in May, the token is issued on Solana; Western Union is also developing a Rain and Visa crypto-to-cash service spanning 160 markets.

Western Union aims to use its U.S. Dollar Payment Token (USDPT) to reduce capital tied up in bank accounts that support international transfers, with real-time settlement potentially freeing funds and lowering operating expenses across its remittance network.

The company announced USDPT in October 2025, and the token launched in May 2026. Anchorage Digital Bank issues it on Solana. By settling transfers in real time, USDPT could reduce how long Western Union keeps funds in bank accounts before they are needed. Faster settlement could mean less money tied up ahead of transfers and lower operating expenses. The token could also support money movement around the clock.

Western Union is also developing a crypto-to-cash service with infrastructure provider Rain and Visa. The service connects cryptocurrency balances to the company’s cash network and covers 160 markets. Customers could convert crypto into fiat and collect cash at a Western Union store. “The consumer can literally pay a small fee, change from crypto to fiat, and then walk into a Western Union store and exit with cash,” said Malcolm Clark, Western Union’s head of digital assets. Clark has also said people outside crypto conferences have little interest in learning about stablecoins.

Western Union plans to accept other cryptocurrencies and convert them into USDPT before transfers are completed.

The U.S. regulatory backdrop includes the GENIUS Act, which established a federal framework for payment stablecoins in July 2025. Clark identified the proposed CLARITY Act as a possible next step toward connecting stablecoins with traditional finance.
