> The group wants to build a larger union, overturn an existing agreement with Micron’s Taichung union and negotiate anew.

A Taoyuan union at U.S. chipmaker Micron is recruiting members from the company’s Taichung union to build a larger union and reopen talks over an existing labor agreement.

The Taoyuan group wants Micron to renegotiate and aims to overturn the agreement already reached with the Taichung union. The Taoyuan union has fewer than 3,000 members and is seeking to expand its membership by bringing in Taichung union members.

Taichung union chairman 徐志銘 said the existing agreement has legal effect and that he respects the Taoyuan union’s approach.

Micron’s [planned Taoyuan memory plant](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/business/50078>) is a $3 billion to $4.5 billion project designed to produce high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and dynamic random-access memory (DRAM). Production was originally scheduled to begin in 2028. The project includes equipment purchases from ASML.

Taiwan accounts for 60% of Micron’s global DRAM production and a large share of its HBM output. The company has also committed $250 billion to investment in the United States, including a project in New York, and is expanding capacity in Japan and Singapore.
