> The restaurant chain also aims to generate positive free cash flow and fund its growth with internally generated cash by 2031.

Kura Sushi USA plans 17 restaurant openings and forecast fiscal 2027 sales of $376 million to $381 million, as it works toward generating enough cash internally to fund its growth by 2031.

The company issued its outlook with fiscal 2026 results on Thursday, Nov. 5. Its forecast calls for average net capital spending of about $2.6 million per new restaurant, general and administrative expenses equal to about 11.5% of sales, and restaurant-level operating profit margins of about 19%.

President, CEO and CFO Hajime “Jimmy” Uba said during the company’s earnings call that Kura expects to “generate positive free cash flow and become self-funding by 2031.” He tied that goal to restoring restaurant-level operating profit margins to about 20% and shifting expansion to a unit-based plan.

The outlook follows a fiscal fourth quarter in which comparable restaurant sales fell 5.7%. Traffic declined 11.5%, while price and mix increased 5.8%. Sales for the quarter were $88.9 million, up from $79.4 million a year earlier.

For the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, sales rose to $328.3 million from $282.8 million in fiscal 2025. Comparable sales slipped 0.4%, with traffic down 4.3% and price and mix up 3.9%. Kura’s annual net loss widened to $4.6 million from $1.9 million in fiscal 2025.

Kura opened 16 restaurants in fiscal 2026 and had 95 locations in 24 states and Washington, D.C., at fiscal year-end. Three openings after Aug. 31 took Kura to 98 restaurants in 25 states and Washington, D.C. The fiscal 2027 plan calls for one more opening than the company added during fiscal 2026.
