Japan’s 10-year government bond yield climbed to 3.055% on Thursday, its highest level since August 1996, as a sharp rise in U.S. Treasury yields intensified a broader global repricing of borrowing costs.

The benchmark Japanese yield added 8 basis points. The 30-year yield rose nearly 7 basis points to 4.134%, while inflation concerns increased alongside a weaker yen.

In the United States, the 10-year Treasury yield reached a 19-year high. Five-year yields moved above 5% after a $70 billion Treasury auction drew weak demand.

The U.S. move followed stronger-than-expected purchasing managers’ data and a rebound in oil prices. Higher yields across both markets point to tighter financial conditions and could affect liquidity in crypto markets, where Bitcoin (BTC) and other digital assets often trade alongside broader risk sentiment.

The latest increase extends a rise in Japan’s benchmark borrowing costs earlier in September, when they reached their highest level in three decades.
