> The Market Vector Digital Assets 100 Index has stayed broadly flat since 2017 while the Nasdaq 100 rose, with average volatility about three times higher.

Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies may be viewed as underperforming assets from a risk and portfolio-management perspective, senior analyst Mike McGlone said.

The Market Vector Digital Assets 100 Index (MVDA), which is about two-thirds Bitcoin, has remained broadly flat since 2017. The Nasdaq 100 Index rose over the same period.

The MVDA’s average volatility was about three times that of the Nasdaq 100. Its positive correlation with stocks also limited its ability to diversify portfolio risk, McGlone said.

McGlone said the arrival of Bitcoin futures in 2017 marked crypto’s entry into the mainstream. After that point, the MVDA stopped outperforming the Nasdaq 100.

He also said U.S. ETF listings and Donald Trump’s shift in position before the 2024 election may have represented crypto’s peak. McGlone said the situation is unlikely to change.
