> ZEC reached a Sept. 26 close of $1,653.12, while Gemini later moved its Zcash infrastructure to the Rust-based Zakura full node.

Zcash (ZEC) rallied across cited September dates before Gemini announced an infrastructure upgrade, while the network separately plans a change to its block schedule.

ZEC closed at $1,335.51 on Sept. 16, with a market capitalization of $18.797 billion and trading volume of $948.292 million. The token then closed at $1,499.02 on Sept. 23, $1,546.12 on Sept. 24, $1,555.66 on Sept. 25, $1,653.12 on Sept. 26 and $1,587.05 on Sept. 27. The historical dates use UTC.

Gemini announced the infrastructure change on Sept. 29, after the cited September price movements. The exchange moved its Zcash infrastructure to Zakura, an open-source full node written in Rust.

Gemini said its Zakura deployments reached the chain tip in slightly more than six hours, compared with nearly a day for Zebra. The exchange said the change would not alter customer operations.

“Deposits and withdrawals will work exactly as before. All improvements are behind the scenes,” Gemini said.

Zcash launched in October 2016 and uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify shielded transactions without publicly revealing transaction details. Gemini listed ZEC in 2018, added shielded withdrawals in 2020 and introduced unified addresses and Orchard support in 2025.

Gemini also said Zcash coinholders voted Sept. 14 to reduce target block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds through the planned NU7 upgrade. The upgrade is targeted for November 2026.

The shorter block schedule would represent a technical change to how frequently new blocks are targeted on the network. Gemini’s infrastructure update addresses node synchronization, while the NU7 proposal concerns the network’s block timing.

The next stated milestone is the planned NU7 upgrade in November 2026.
