U.S. pension funds may sell about $33 billion in stocks around the end of September, a potential flow large enough to rank in the 98th percentile of pension-fund stock sales since 2000.

Systematic CTA funds could partly offset the selling pressure, but their direction depends on market performance. If stocks remain broadly flat, CTA funds are expected to buy about $11.5 billion in global equities.

That potential buying could approach $30 billion if markets rise. If stocks fall, CTA funds may instead sell an additional $15.8 billion.

The scenarios point to sharply different month-end equity flows depending on whether markets hold steady, gain or decline.
