> The Ibovespa rose 7.70% after the first-round vote, while the real traded below 5 reais per dollar. A runoff is set for Oct. 25.

Brazilian stocks reached a record close and the real moved below 5 per dollar after Flávio Bolsonaro led the first round, as investors priced in the possibility of greater fiscal restraint.

The Ibovespa gained 7.70% on Oct. 5, ending at 206,911.89 points after reaching 209,605.70 during the session. Brazil’s real also traded below 5 per dollar, with the Central Bank’s PTAX reference rate at 4.9853 reais on the buying side and 4.9859 reais on the selling side.

Bolsonaro received 56,104,268 votes, or 47.03% of valid ballots. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received 53,876,617 votes, or 45.16%.

The result increased investor expectations of greater fiscal restraint under a potential Bolsonaro administration. That market interpretation remains conditional because neither candidate won a majority and the election outcome is still pending.

Bolsonaro and Lula will meet in the second round on Oct. 25.
