> Vishal Khanduja and Brian Ellis raised the Eaton Vance Total Return Bond Fund’s duration to 6.07 years as yields reached a 20-year high.

Vishal Khanduja, a bond investor at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, has turned bullish on U.S. bonds for the first time in 10 years as higher yields begin to constrain economic growth.

Khanduja and Brian Ellis jointly manage the $4.1 billion Eaton Vance Total Return Bond Fund. As of June, they had raised the fund’s duration to 6.07 years.

Duration measures a bond portfolio’s sensitivity to interest-rate changes. A higher duration generally indicates greater sensitivity to movements in rates.

Khanduja, who heads the firm’s broad-market fixed-income team, said the move marked the fund’s first overweight duration position in more than 10 years.

The shift followed a rise in yields to a 20-year high, increasing pressure on economic growth. The fund’s positioning reflects a more constructive view of U.S. bonds after the extended increase in yields.
