> Eleven tankers were attacked during the week ended Oct. 4, with five more targeted this week as crude shipments through the strait remain below prewar levels.

Tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz have reached a wartime high as Iran intensifies pressure on commercial shipping, threatening the oil flows that underpin global markets and broader risk sentiment.

Eleven tankers were attacked while transiting the strait during the week ended Oct. 4. Five more tankers came under attack this week, including one struck by multiple projectiles off Qatar and another hit Friday near the United Arab Emirates, where a fire broke out.

Twelve sailors were injured Monday when a projectile struck their tanker. At least nine sailors have died in ship attacks since July, while 24 sailors have been killed in attacks on 100 commercial ships across the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman since the war began in late February.

Crude shipments through Hormuz stood at 8.5 million barrels per day for the week ended Wednesday, about 40% below normal prewar levels. Middle East exports totaled 15.3 million barrels per day, down 10% from before the war.

Oil exports had rebounded to prewar levels in September as U.S. military escorts helped ships use a route along Oman's coast. The latest attacks show that shipments are moving through the region under sharply elevated maritime risk.
