> Chief U.S. Equity Strategist Mike Wilson said a moderate September consumer price index reading could ease bond-market pressure, potentially supporting broader gains in stocks.

The bond market may already be delivering some of the tightening the Federal Reserve would otherwise achieve through higher policy rates, potentially reducing pressure for additional increases, Morgan Stanley Chief U.S. Equity Strategist Mike Wilson said.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield has risen about 120 basis points since February, tightening financial conditions. Wilson said further rate increases may not be necessary if market-driven tightening slows the economy.

Investors should monitor financial-sector performance and volatility in the bond market, Wilson said. Those indicators could show whether higher yields are beginning to weigh on economic activity.

A moderate September consumer price index reading could ease pressure in bond markets and give the Federal Reserve more room to assess conditions. Reduced bond-market stress could potentially support broader gains across stocks.
